SODIS Method In Action

What Is SODIS?
Solar Water Disinfection, or SODIS, is a simple and inexpensive method to disinfect drinking water.

How does it work?
Fill contaminated water into a transparent PET-bottle or glass bottle and expose to the sun for 6 (six) hours. After six hours of sunlight have penetrated the bottle,, the UV-radiation of the sun kills dangerous pathogens in the water.

It seems so simple. Why is it effective?
An estimated 1.8 million people die every year from diarrheal diseases, mainly by drinking or coming into contact with dirty water. The SODIS-method helps prevent diarrhea which drastically reduces dehydration and death. Since there are 1.8 million deaths and many more sick from unclean water, even a small increase in water quality saves many, many lives.

Who benefits by SODIS projects?
More than 4,000 children die every day from the consequences of diarrhea caused by unsafe drinking water. SODIS supplies and resources are being used by hundreds of communities around the world - but so many are on the waiting list waiting for help.

Is there any criticism to SODIS?
There are some who disagree with the effectiveness of SODIS when comparing lab results to real world studies. Research seems to overwhelmingly favor SODIS as a low cost, effective solution, but not all studies would agree. In order to provide unbiased information, please check out a recent study conducted in Bolivia.

ABOUT THE SODIS WATER PROJECT

The SODIS Water Project (SodisWater.com) is a social education project whose sole focus is educate, empower and enable SODIS water projects. We focus on entrepreneurial approaches to social and environmental issues surrounding SODIS methods by providing financial means, educational materials, and SODIS resources.. These efforts typically include advocating SODIS, providing SODIS resources, supplies, and native-langage educational materials that benefit grassroots projects. We are solely and completely operated by the goodwill of volunteers, sponsorships, contributions, and purchases through our SODIS Shop (proceeds fund additional SODIS Water Project efforts).

Who created the SODIS method?
SODIS (abbreviation of Solar Water Disinfection) is an initiative of Eawag, a world leader in aquatic research located in Switzerland. Their SODIS initiative can be accessed online at www.sodis.ch.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER NICK PASSIG

Providing world communities with the best chance for survival is a challenge on many fronts. One of the most basic human needs, clean drinking water, is not available to millions of people around the world. Although water supplies are available to those in need, the water is unsafe. To date, many communities have been unable to create sustainable potable water systems due to financial or political strife. Our neighbors should not be forgotten - they need our help.

There are many reasons for the difficulty in providing clean water to the world. While we cannot address them all, we can do some small things to enable communtiies to help themselves. With plastic bottles and education in effective disinfection methods, these communities can virtually eliminate unsafe water issues. Since SODIS water treatment methods are relatively inexpensive, even small volunteer contributions could provide the means for clean water.

We believe that social education projects like SodisWater.com allow for the expansion of needed programs without government dependency. By working together and with the help of volunteer contributions, we can save thousands of lives.

We need the world community to succeed for the sake of our own success. The mission of the SODIS Water Project has always been to empower grassroots community projects, social entrepreneurial efforts, and research surrounding the solar disinfection of water. We're proud to be a part of the movement that considers the world to be one large community and our hope is that we continue to enhance clean water programs until the problem is no longer.

Thank you for your continued support!
